Sustainable manufacturing of stainless steel

Stainless steel is a scrap-based product, with unlimited recyclability. Cogne’s stainless steel is made from 70% recycled materials. The mill in Degerfors has a low carbon footprint, only one CO₂ emission source is remaining. The rest of the production in Degerfors and Storfors is electrified, powered by 98% fossil-free energy. In Storfors, the production is totally electrified, with100% renewable energy.

Sustainable manufacturing of stainless steel

In Cogne Degerfors Long Products, we are continuously striving to decrease our environmental impact by reducing energy consumption, emissions to air and water along with using raw material in the most efficient way. As an example, we have in the last few years substituted our vehicle fleet to electrical or hybrid vehicles, resulting in a majority of our vehicles being electrical or hybrids.

By choosing Cogne Degerfors Long Products, you are not only selecting a product known for its quality and reliability but also support sustainable and responsible manufacturing practices.

Sustainable Processes

Less CO₂ emissions with Oxy fuel technique
Our only CO₂ emission source is our pit furnaces in Degerfors which are fueled with LPG, using the oxy-fuel combustion process. DLP was one of the pioneers in using oxy-fuel technique, which not only decrease the fuel consumption leading to decreased CO₂ emissions, but also minimizes the emissions of NOₓ.

Energy-efficient rolling mill
The Degerfors rolling mill features a 3-stand high roughing mill, which is more energy-efficient than a 2-stand high. This setup allows the workpiece to pass between the bottom and middle rolls, then back between the top and middle rolls, without reversing the direction of the rolls.

Fossil-free electricity
In Sweden, 98% of electrical power is produced from fossil-free sources, with hydropower, nuclear power, and wind power being the top three energy sources. At our Storfors finishing line, 32% of DLP’s total electricity consumption comes from 100% certified renewable sources.

Recycled raw materials

Up to 70% of the raw materials used to produce our stainless steel bars and billets come from stainless steel scrap. Stainless steels are fully recyclable and can be recycled repeatedly without compromising the quality of the finished product. Once you are finished using your stainless steel product, just sort it in the metal recycling bin, and we can melt it down and produce it to a new product.

Health and Safety

We take workplace safety very seriously. All operations undergo regular safety assessments conducted by a company representative and an employee-elected safety officer. The safety officer has the authority to immediately halt any work deemed unsafe.

We ensure safe working conditions through a combination of built-in safety features in our machinery, mandatory use of PPE, adherence to safety procedures, and employee training. In 2024, we had only one minor injury reported and invested in new overhead cranes to enhance safety. Additionally, we provide CPR training for all employees.

Supporting the local community

Cogne DLP is one of the largest companies in Degerfors, and with size comes responsibility for the local community. Whenever possible, we use local suppliers and contractors to support existing local businesses and foster a thriving local community.
